Once upon a time, I found respite in creating beautiful spaces in which to habitat. Our first home together was a slightly restored 1880 Victorian. I leaned in to the Victorian aesthetic. Twelve foot ceilings to give height and space to my 6’4 husband and five fireplaces to warm our souls in West Virginia winters, and a lovely turret in the spacious attic which my husband dreamed of ballroom dancing within. It was a perfect house for an idealistic young childless couple. But then we began to long for more than the two of us and to build our family, to add a child to our heart and home…

And so what started as a desire for a single child, became a family of six in less than 13 months. With a full heart, but very busy hands, decorating my home and creating a beautiful space came secondary to just making sure everyone was fed, held, soothed and loved. The needs of a grand old dame were set aside, and the convenience of a modern home appealed to our tired bodies. We sold our dream house. We were not sad, we were growing.

We have owned a couple homes since then which have serviced us well. Good and solid built homes which needed little care or restoration and whose primary projects involved painting walls and changing out cabinet knobs. We landed in a home in

2013 that we had imagined would carry us and our children through their college years. But the pandemic changed all of that and we found ourselves shopping for a home in the mad real estate market of 2021.

Our 1978 Cape Code home in Georgia is a perfect fit for our two sets of twins who each found that our prior home’s smaller size made the the lock down of the Covid-19 Pandemic an exercise in sharing. Sharing bathrooms, sharing bedrooms, sharing space. At nearly 5,000 square feet this home has the space and bathrooms teenagers need, but lacked the amenities I had grown accustom to, spoiled by. I felt sad when I should of felt joy in finding a home where all of us could have space and joy.

What I had forgotten was my own self. The self who finds quietude in cozy living spaces, who tidying up and arranging flowers, or crafting vignettes gave joy to. This home has become my project in reclaiming my girlhood self, and sharing my ideas and thoughts with others
